Local presence is a caller ID selection rule that chooses a number associated with the person's area.1 It can increase the likelihood of an answer, though it cannot guarantee one.2 The feature is only as local as the number pool behind it. When there is no exact or regional match, the call falls back to a default caller ID.3 Treat local presence as a routing setup to inspect, then test its answer effect under the same calling conditions.
What local presence can change
Use caller ID to give an unfamiliar call a local signal before the person decides whether to answer. Local caller IDs feel familiar and encourage recipients to answer unknown numbers.4 Most diallers can set caller ID to match a prospect's geographic area, which makes the number familiar and increases the likelihood of an answer.5 Consistent local presence builds credibility and reduces the perception that calls are spam.6
Use the feature when your calling plan covers several regions and your number pool can represent those regions.
Set it up in call order
-
Check the territory first. Local Presence Dialing is supported only in the U.S. and Canada.7 If your list sits outside those markets, choose a caller ID method supported for that territory.
-
Build the number pool before enabling the routing rule. The recommended approach is to own a pool of regularly used numbers and use the number closest to the recipient for outbound calls.8 Each outbound ANI should be valid, legitimately assigned, domestic, and local, and it must not be Toll-Free.9 Region-specific numbers that you purchase and verify make calls appear local to recipients and can improve pickup rates.10
-
Let the system choose the caller ID from the contact's area code. When a call starts, the system checks the contact's area code against the available numbers.11 An exact area code match becomes the caller ID.12 When no exact match exists, the system attempts to use a number from the same geographic region.13 When no regional match exists, it uses the default caller ID.3
-
Set the default before you switch the feature on. The configuration path is Sub-account Settings > Phone Numbers > Advanced Settings > Voice Calls > Outbound Call > Default Phone Number for Outbound Calls.14 Then turn Enable Local Presence Dialing on.15 The default is your fallback, so choose it with the same care as the local numbers.
-
Test the selection before a live calling session. Check the number displayed for an exact match, a nearby regional match, and a contact with no available match. If you need a specific caller ID for one call, click Change on the dialer's top bar and choose a phone number.16 After the call, the system switches back to Local Presence Dialing.17 If you need to keep the selected number, disable local presence for that use case.18
How to test the answer-rate effect
A clean comparison tells you whether local presence helps your list. Keep the audience, calling window, message, and person making the calls consistent while you compare local caller IDs with the default caller ID.
Record answered calls separately from voicemail, busy signals, failed calls, and other outcomes. Review the caller ID that appeared on each call, then mark whether the system used an exact match, a regional fallback, or the default. This shows whether a weak result came from local presence itself or from a thin number pool.
Compare answer rates before judging downstream outcomes. For businesses operating across multiple U.S. and Canadian regions, local presence increases engagement and reduces missed connections.19 If answered calls rise while the conversation quality stays steady, keep the routing rule. If the result does not improve, inspect the pool and fallback pattern before buying more numbers.
What not to do
After enabling the feature, avoid these mistakes.
- Do not add numbers to the pool without checking that each one is valid, legitimately assigned, domestic, and local, and that it is not Toll-Free.9
- Do not assume every call will receive an exact local match. The system can use another number from the same region.13 It then falls back to the default caller ID.
- Do not manually switch numbers for every call when automated selection is available. Automated number selection removes that manual switching.20
- Do not assume a one-call override will persist. The system returns to Local Presence Dialing after the call.17
- Do not plan individual user exceptions if your account controls local presence at the sub-account level. Local presence can be disabled for sub-accounts, though it cannot be disabled for individual users.21
- Do not evaluate the feature outside its supported territory. The described implementation supports the U.S. and Canada only.7
